How to Prepare for Your First Studio Session

Recording session in progress at Imperial Audio

Studio time is the cheapest it will ever feel when you're prepared and the most expensive when you're not. Here's the honest checklist we wish every first-timer had — it routinely saves clients an hour of billable time.

    Before the session

    • Know the song cold. Rehearse to the actual beat at performance volume — singing quietly on headphones at home builds habits the booth will expose.
    • Bring the beat as a WAV (and the artist's name for the file, not "FINAL_beat_v7"). If you have stems or a tracked-out version, bring those too — your mix will thank you.
    • Pick 2–3 reference songs whose vocal sound you love. "Make it hit like this" is a better brief than any adjective.
    • Protect the voice: hydrate the day before, skip dairy and shouting the night of, and bring room-temperature water.

    During the session

Warm up in the car, not on the clock. Cut the energy sections first while the voice is fresh — hooks before verses. Trust the engineer on takes: "one more" is almost always worth it, and comping two good takes beats chasing one perfect one. And ask questions — a good engineer narrates what they're doing, and you'll record better forever after.

    What not to worry about

You don't need your own mic, interface knowledge, or a finished mix vision. That's the room's job. Every session at Imperial includes the engineer, and if you want to see the space before you book, the tour is free.
